Due to the harsh environment with alternating loads in combination with high ambient temperatures, classic rolling mill motors are used. Some manufacturers and users still consider the "ring-rib motors" an integral part of a rolling mill. Three-phase motors with horizontal cooling fins have also been successfully operated in various rolling mill areas in recent years. Important in this context: The various loads and required acceleration and braking torques of a roller mill are fully included in the calculations!
In addition, it can happen that a slab blocks and is accelerated by only a few rollers, which overloads the respective drives. The main task of the roller table motors is to decelerate and accelerate the slabs, profiles or pipes on the system. Relatively little power is needed in the transport phases with constant speed. Geared motors in steel mills, especially in the rolling mill, are calculated and selected with a high operating factor based on the acceleration torque due to the high acceleration work and the impact loads.
